Throughout Mexico’s history, there have been small villages in the countryside. For generations families have lived and worked on the farms that surrounded these villages. The families who worked the land did not own any part of the farms. This meant that they did not make very much money, because they are paid low wages to work for the landowners. In fact more than 70 percent of Mexico’s population in the 1920s was extremely poor. Look at the pictures below. The three pictures are all from 1920s Mexico.
- What is being shown in these pictures?
- Compare and Contrast what is shown in these pictures to what we've read about in Esperanza Rising.

In the first picture there are poor familes standing next to their cottage. In the second picture there is a man on a hores with a whip.He is lashing the whip at the slaves to work faster. In the final picture there is a large family that is also poor standing on the outside of their house made of sticks.Esperanza Rising took place in the 1920s,the same time as the rich versus poor in mexico.70 percent of mexico's population was poor. After Esperanza's house burned down her and her family became one of that 70 persent.
.1 wooden plank houses with straw roofs, man working in a farm and more farm houses.
.2 these houses like in Esperanza have a farm in the back of it. Also the pictures have slaves like in Esperanza.to me these houses don't look like they explain in esperanza.
The pictures are being shown is about a family who is not poor. The next picture is about a man on a horse telling workers what to do in a mean way and he looks like a bandit. The last picture is about a family who is poor. Tio Luois in Esperanza rising is like the mean guy in that picture because there both being mean to people.Esperanza's family is like the family in the first picture Esperanza family is rich and the family in the picture is rich.
In the first picture shows a family
a typical family with a regular Mexican house. In "esperanza Rising" Esperanza is more of a higher class family, but they don't act like they're super rich because they don't brag or waist they're money. In the second is a Farm owner making his workers work faster. In "Esperanza Rising" Papa is a nicer Farm owner because he doesn't yell at them and gives them part of his land.
Finally in the last picture is a real photo from mexico and its a family with a farm. This is like "Esperanza Rising" because they're a wealthy family that has a farm.
There is wooden houses and kids and adults. In the second picture it shows people being whipped while their picking up heavy stuff. And in the last picture there is a poor family living in a wooden house with pigs and children. And in Espenranza Rising, there is also poor people living in little wooden houses.
I imagined that the poor had hard work but little money in these pictures i proved it to myself.Another picture that i thought in my mind was the poorly constructed homes.one thoght i had was that i what a ranch looks like.
I see in these pictures that the people were forced to work and that they have houses made of sticks.Esperanza Rising and the pictures have some similarities. In the pictures you can tell that they are very poor.In Esperanza Rising, the sevants quarters sound like they are poor like the 1st and 3rd pictures. One difference is the way the people look and dress. The way they dress is poor compared to the rich people.Esperanza is rich and the way Pam Munoz Ryan described her bright yellow dress, it sounds like she has some (ALOT) of money.
In the pictures they show poor children that are barefoot. Them and there family work on the farm and other people work wih them.i see oeople being wiped by the owner
of the farm on his horse. in esparanza Rising and the pictures that are shown there are many simalaraties and diffrences between them like in esparanza rising they have to move away to california to work like in the pictures.
the pictures in "Mexico:Rich versus Poor," has many similarities. One similarity is they both take place in Mexico. Also in "Esperanza rising"they have servants and the pictures show servants working, and poor people. Some differences are that Esperanza is rich and in the pictures all they showed was poor people. also in "Espeanza Rising they didn't treat Alfonso,Hortenzia and migel like they way they treated the servants in the picture.
The pictures compared to the story the story says that Esperranaz lives in a big house but in this picture it shows two houses next to each other and the like is that they both are in Mexico. In the picture it show a man hiting the workers but in the book it does not show nobody hiting the workers. But what the picture and the story have alike is that in the story the are harvesting grapes and in the pictuer it show's them harvesting plant's or fuirt's. In the next picture it shows a big house and two adults and a lot of children . But in the story it says Esperanza is an only chlid. but the like is that theres a big house in the picture and a big house in the story.
The first picture is a famaly and a house, the second one is a man on a horse and he is whiping the men with bomboo so im assuming the men with bamboo are slaves, the third one is an old famaly by their farm.Eaperanza lives in a big house and in the pictures they are small, bolth in Mexico,Esperanza
harvistes grapes none of these show
them harvisting grapes,Esperanza is
an only child and in the pictures there are many children,Esperanza is moving to California and in all the pictures they are not in or moving to California.
In the frist piture it shows a family in Mexico that is poor and in Esperanza Rising they were not poor. In the second piture it shows a man that is wipping his slaves on a horse in the book thier was no wipping. In the last piture it shows a family in Mexico standing out side there house (that they probily made) in the book it was a big house but they did't make it (I think).
I have some thing to add in
Esperanza Rising it takes place in 1920 and so is the pictures
In the first picture, there is a family standing by their cottage in a farm. In, the second picture there is a man on a horse with a whip who is forcing the poor worker's to work faster. In the last picture there is a family standing by their poorly treated home. (or cottage)
In the first picture there is a poor family standing with there kids next to there houses. In the second picture theres a man on a horse thats wiping the slaves. In the third picture theres an other poor family with there house and kids.In the story Esperanza rising took place in the 1920s like the rich versus poor. When the man is wiping the slaves it remind me of tio Luis.
In the first pictures it is showing people that are poor and dont have the nicest clothing on. their house is made out of wood sticks and straw. In Esperanza Risind it sounded like a nice big house. In the second picture it looks like their is sevants working and their owner is wipping them. In Esperanza Rising Esperanza has severants but Esperanzas family treated they servants much better. In the last picture it looks like a family that has a nice house nice clothing and a big feild were they harvest food ,crop ,and more.In Esperanza Rising they had nice clothing a nice house and a big land were they harvest, crop and, other things.
I can see kids that are in front of a house that is made of sticks and in the second picture I can see poor people picking up stuff. The third picture shows people standing in front of a wooden house. Compared to Esperanza Rising Esperanza who lives in a big fancy house becomes apart of the 70 percent of Mexico that is poor. She becomes one of these families.
In these pictures the people are very poor. They have no shoes and not very good clothing. There houses are hade out of wood boards and tied together with straw and rope. It looks like the houses are almost in the middle of nowhere. In 'Esperanza Rising"they describe their house very nicely. They say Esperanza has a bright yellow dress. In these pictures their clothes do not look very good and they have no shoes. Esperanza has servants, but these people look like they are servants. In those pictures the owners are whipping their servants, and in Esperanza Risng they don't whip them they treat them better. In those pictures they have animals and fruit. In Esperanza Risng they harvest grapes. In the pictures the children are working and in Esperanza Rising the only child who works is a servants. Esperanza does not work. In Esperanza Rising they give there servants part of the land to live in, in this passage it says they didnot give the workers any part of there land. Esperanza has a big house and in one of the photos there is a big house. The pictures of the servants in these photos and are not how i imagined the way Esperanza's house to look.
In the first picture it shows people outside there house in mexico there are a lot of kids but in Esperanza rising she is a only child.
In the second picture it shows people picking grapes and in the book people are also picking grapes there is only one diffrence in Esperanza rising they are not getting wip.
In the third picture it shows kids in front of a burnt house in the book Esperanza her house burns down to.
In the pictures shown i see a poor family with a staw house and the famiy was poorly clad!In the book esperanza rising she has a beauiful house and is well clad!
In the second photo i see hard workers working while the boss is watching them work i also see that if the workers don't work hard they will get hurt!In the book esperanza rising she doesn't need to work she has her own servents.
In the third photo i see a family that lives near a forest i also see lots of animals even wolfs. ther clothes are very town like but not like our clothes. In the book esperanza rising she lives on a ranch or a farm she even has servents1In the story it says esperanza is a only child but in the picture there are 6 kids!
In the first picture there is a poor family sitting by two small wooden houses. In the second picture it looks like slave are getting whipped and demanded to work.In the third picture there is a big family standing next to a house that looks very poor.In the story Esperanza Rising they did not treat there servants like in the second picture he treated them with respect.
IN THIS PICTURE I SEE ESPERANZA FAMILY IN MEXICO. AND IT LOOKS LIKE THEY LIVE IN A BARN.WITH CHICKEN'S AND BIRDS.4 ADULTS AND 5 CHILDREN.AND VEGGIES. THEY ARE ALSO POOR AND RICH$$$$$. AND THEY LOOK LIKE THEY ARE HAVING A GOOD TIME.THEIR ARE PEOPLE AND HORSES AND PAPA.AND THEY HAVE WHIPS.
in the fist picture there is a family sitting next to two houses. in the second picture it looks like there are slaves getting whipped by a man. in the third picture it looks like there is a big family that lookes poor. in the book esperanza rising her dad did not whip the servents he treated them whith respect.
In the first picture it is a family that is very poor and they have to work on a farm and do all the things they can to make some money so that the parents can take care of the kids. The secend picture is these rich people are making the poor people that do not have alot of money do alot of the hard work. But the poor people do not get paid even thouhg they do alot of work that most of us can not do.In the third picture it shows what kind of house the slaves live in.But in the secend picture it does not show how the father treets the slaves he treets them with respect so will love there job.
WHAT THESE PHOTOGRAPHES ARE SHOWING ME IS HOW MEXICOS HISTORY BEEN IN THE 1920S.THEY ALSO SHOW HOW THEY DID THERE JOB. AND HOW THE HOMES LOOKED LIKE BACK THEN.WHEN I WAS READING THE STORY EZPERANZA RISING
In theses pictures it looks like they are poor and there house looks like a barn and they need lots of money and help. It seems like Esperanza has a better home then all of the pictures that i see and that Esperanza has a better house and that she can aford alot of thing like food, cothes, and allthat but in the picures they seem to not have what esperanza has. Also they look like slaves in one picture.
In this pictures it is compared to the story Esperranaz rising she lives in a big house but in this picture it shows tow house next to each other and there both in Mexico. In the picture it shows a man hiting his worker with a whip. But what the picture and the story have alike is that in the story there harvesting fruit and in the picture it show harvesting plants and fruit.
The first picture illasterates a family with five children living in a few rickity old houses. In the second picture it illasterates poor mexican citizens working their backs off for a landowner. The last one shows another poor famiy living with bad working condictions with two pigs. I noticed that these pictures compared to "Esperanza Rising" is simaler because it takes place in the same setting and near the same date, it's in mexican feilds in the 1920's to 9130's. A difference is that her Papa owned a lot of land and was caring to everyone, including his workers and servents. In these pictures nobody has a lot of land and the landowner in picture two is forcing his servents to work or he will whip them.
